长毛兔体内的脂肪主要是由饲料中的碳水化合物转变成脂肪酸后合成的。脂肪酸中的亚麻油酸和花生油酸对长毛兔具有重要的作用（特别是幼兔），但在兔体内又不能合成，必须由饲料中供给，称为必需脂肪酸。
