人类现在开始知道，我们真正所需要的蛋白质，要比以前相信的少得多。即使是完全素食者，也可能摄取过多的蛋白质。兔兔不需要动物性脂肪，而且它们的身体也不能够吸收动物性脂肪。兔兔对脂肪的需求量很小，1~2％的含量对大多数兔兔而言已经足够。兔兔和人类一样，摄食过多动物性脂肪中的胆固醇时，会产生像动脉硬化这类的疾病。

那么为什么我们有时候会在兔粮的营养成份，见到动物性脂肪，或其延伸物呢？因为兔粮原本是制造给种兔吃的，大部分的种兔要比家兔承受更多的紧迫(Stress)，所以许多品牌兔粮，标榜会让兔兔生育机能大增，这些兔粮含有高量的蛋白质(16~20％)。
